A total of $3.9 million was available in rebates to South Carolina residents purchasing ENERGY STAR appliances in the state beginning March 31, 2010 and continued until all funds were exhausted May 19, 2010.

All of the $1.95 million allotted for mail-in rebates for central air conditioning units, heat pumps, gas furnaces and water heaters was exhausted by 1:19 p.m. on April 1, 2010, just one day after the program launched. All of the $1.95 million allotted for instant rebates on clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators and room air conditioning units was claimed May 19 by 7:26 p.m. To read more about the program, please click here.

This program was funded by South Carolina’s share of federal stimulus funds being distributed to each state for appliance rebates. Rebates did not apply to online purchases or purchases made prior to March 31, 2010. For appliances purchased in a store, the rebate was applied instantly at the register. Installers of whole-house equipment such as water heaters and HVAC systems reserved rebates online and then provided customers with mail-in forms. Customers participating in this program were required to let retailers and installers recycle their old, inefficient appliances to ensure that they are taken off the power grid.
